General information

The carbohydrates contained in food are our most important sources of energy. In the body they are (almost) all converted into glucose. Dextrose is either stored (converted into fat) or used to produce energy. And whenever that happens, we need vitamin B1. Another important role is played by vitamin B1 in the nerve tracts. There it is involved in the transmission of nerve signals. Both functions together are the basis for life: the provision of energy and the processing of information.

But how do you recognize a vitamin B1 deficiency?

Fatigue and loss of appetite can be the first signs. This can continue with concentration difficulties and depression as well as nausea and vomiting. These symptoms are non-specific and can have different causes. Therefore, the advice of a doctor or alternative practitioner should be sought.

Reference

The clinically-chemically proven vitamin B1 deficiency can occur in:

    • severe deficiency and malnutrition (e.g. beriberi), artificial nutrition over a longer period of time, zero diet, hemodialysis, malabsorption,
    • chronic alcoholism (alcoholic toxic cardiomyopathy, Wernicke encephalopathy, Korsakov syndrome),
    • diabetic acidosis,
    • severe acute liver dysfunction (hepatic coma, fulminant hepatitis),
    • Thyrotoxicosis,
    • increased need (e.g. pregnancy and lactation).

For risks and side effects, read the package insert and ask your doctor or pharmacist.
